  • DO Register your pet as the Government made it mandatory that all the dog owners should register their pets in their respected Municipal Corporation.
  • DO make early and regular visit to your veterinarian for deworming (starts from age of 15 days), vaccination (starts from age of 45 days) and routine health care.
  • DO feed regular meals, usually offer food for about 10-20 minutes then remove the food. Feed 4-5 times a day until 6 months, thrice a day up to 9 months and twice a day as adults.
  • DO give your pet plenty of water. As it does in humans, water flushes out the system and keeps your pet healthy.
  • DO reward good behavior. Try to catch them doing something right and praise with its favorite treat to reinforce it.
  • DO trained and socialise your pet which includes house training (toilet training and basic obedience commands).
  • DO make sure that they engage in regular physical activities to maintain their body weight and ensure that they live a happy, healthy and long life. Walk your dog every day, especially if it's confined to the indoors or a small yard. Further, it should be taken care of the safety of other's while roaming out the pet.
  • DO always look out for your pet's body language: Any signs of distress, any abnormal vocalizations should be taken seriously. Check for an injury or illness and consult the veterinarian. The vocalization may also be a sign of distress in new environment.
  • DO treat your pet for fleas and ticks. It is possible that your pet may get ticks and fleas from their new friends or on walks. Make sure you check for it regularly and ensure precautions like medicated baths.
  • DO allow some quiet time. Always allow your new pet to spend some time away in the crate. This will allow them to have some peaceful time in their safe space and will help tackle any behavioral issue they may have.
  • DO provide your pet a comfortable and supportive fixed sleeping place.
  • DO brush and comb your dog's hair regularly as it helps in removing dead hairs and promotes oil stimulation within their coat. Dogs are generally fine with once a month medicated baths.
  • DO adhere and follow all government guidelines regarding pet keeping.

DON'T:

  • Upto 90 days (3 months) of age DON'T take your puppy to parks, public areas or unknown areas as they may catch infection and also puppies cannot be considered fully protected by their vaccines until this age.
  • DON'T wait until your pet is sick to see a veterinarian. Puppies have weaker immune systems than adults and commonly exposed to parasites.
  • DON'T allow your pet to chew your body parts, shoes, socks or any other clothes, hard toys, real bones as these may cause injury. Provide your dog with tooth friendly toys and treats.
  • DON'T leave food available all the time. Dogs often gain excessive weight and may become choosy eaters if allowed to eat any time of the day.
  • DON'T make sudden changes to routine or diet. Try replicating the food as closely as you can with the quantity and quality of the food they were getting at the shelter or the previous home. No alternate food, if pet denies eating it.
  • DON'T give human treats and snacks to pets. Human snacks and treats are generally to be avoided with pets. Eatables like chocolates, sugary snacks and fried foods are extremely harmful for pets and should not be given to them under any circumstances.
  • DON'T leave your pet unattended for long periods of time, especially in the first few months. If you have to be away for work or other long periods, try to leave your puppy with someone at home or a friend or pet hostel.
  • DON'T use heavy-handed discipline. Excessive punishment can often make a dog fearful and create behavior problems.
  • DON'T bath too often as this can strip their natural oils which they need for a healthy coat and skin. This could result in a dry, dull coat and itchy skin.
  • DON'T self medicate your pet at home as this may result in an overdose and could lead to serious and potentially fatal outcome.
